I have always been interested in trains and their enormous power and usefulness for the continent. How can goods be transported from here to there when they travel thousands of miles across the most desolate and dangerous terrain known on the planet? Of course the scene changed when we went on the air and built cars and a motorway, but in the era of locomotives there weren’t many ways to transport goods or people in a relatively safe and convenient way.
The orientation of the railway empire is mainly limited to the 1800s, when the first transcontinental railways came into being. There are myths and stories associated with this enormous undertaking. With the game, the tasks you take on can be very well configured. Your goal is to build the largest railway network in the entire United States, and your first goal is to build stations and prepare the ground. To do this, select the desired station according to your needs and price, and move it to the city.
The user interface (UI) is not as simple as it could be, and made me scratch my head several times when asked for in the manual. It’s easy to make decisions when someone is holding your hand, but it becomes much harder to make those decisions when you start playing the game. I’m just advising you to go ahead and follow the model they gave you in the introduction. Whatever my complaint about the user interface, the narrator will tell you exactly what to do.
When you pull out the magic dial with the ZR button, you have several options. This includes the laying of tracks, the purchase of locomotives and building materials, but also items such as stations and passing signals. They point out that a water station must be installed on the train route. They also give you the alarming reality that trains cannot pass each other. It is clear that the laws of physics apply to trains, and that they cannot enter and leave the real world. Who knew?
The problem of knowing which buttons to press to do what the game told me to do became clear. There were a number of options such as watching a short movie, deleting, selecting a building and choosing a building type. None of this was done the way I was supposed to. So logically I decided to move, because it was the only thing that didn’t allow me to stay where I was. He didn’t take anything… …but me off the list of options. At that moment I had the opportunity to furnish my building. The number keys L and R were used to rotate the station. It was very difficult for me to turn the building exactly as I wanted near the highway.
After I demolished my building, I had to connect the tracks. It was very sweet and easy. You can even adjust the track in different areas to follow the chosen terrain layer. Then, for example, a route had to be drawn along the tracks, a locomotive had to be chosen, and so on. It was nice to see how your train immediately started its journey to the next city. However, there was a problem: the locomotives needed water. Your next task is to install a water tower. Then we moved on to the next version of trains that have this problem with solids, so we had to build diversions. It is not necessary to fill in the forms three times, but to determine the route and it is automatically linked to the forms. You set your signals and the direction in which you want to go and proceed to the next task. Everything went smoothly, but I found it difficult to understand the concepts presented for that moment. Anyway, your task now is to set up as many stations as possible and keep track of how you build up your empire.
The graphics are quite nice for the Switch version. I know it doesn’t compete with high-end computers or even the current generation of set-top boxes, but it’s more than enough, and you can get as close as you want to see how your beautiful locomotive does its job. The characters in the game have a cartoon effect for them, but the choice of art is not so important, and I appreciate that Dick Dastardly looks at some of them. Exaggerated features are always welcome in my book and give it character and a cool look. Give people a realistic look for something like Call of Duty, but useless in a game where your goal is to dominate the railway.
Sounds – that’s exactly what you can expect when you’re playing with locomotives. Their trains make tuck-a-haw sounds, the music is tasteful and nothing outrageous. They even have a voice for the storyteller and the trainer. I played too many trade games where it was missing, but was available on other platforms.
My main recommendation is a very good game to get your feet wet in the world of simulation. I found it confusing, but pretty funny and fast, and that’s not what I expected. I’ve taken up the challenge, and I’m looking forward to really seeing you get involved in the various game options they offer, including a sandbox where you can do whatever you want. At least I saw an opportunity. If you like game simulators, this is best for your favorite portable system. However, if you have trouble seeing small print, play on the big screen or buy a cheat sheet on the rotating screen at the pharmacy. Those old eyes can’t see the little things on the little screen. This is the first game where it has really become a problem for me. We don’t all have a 20/15 vision with eagle eyes.

If you dream of a very good simulator, but are disappointed not to see anything on the switch, let’s try it. It’s designed to give fans of the watch genre hours of fun and allow you to play it the way you want. However, for those of us who can see less than perfectly, it is not very good in the portable version.
