With the recent release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars and the announcement of Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury in February 2021, Nintendo began bringing older games to its flagship. Pikmin 3 Deluxe is Nintendo’s newest port in a long line of Wii U ports (it doesn’t look like there are many games left). The only question I have to ask is why it took me almost twenty years to discover this great franchise.
It’s almost a cute version of StarCraft.
Pikmin 3 Deluxe is a real-time puzzle and strategy game. Originally developed by Nintendo for Wii U and released in 2013, it has now been ported to the Switch. Three captains of extraterrestrial explorers from the planet Coppay, Alf, Brittany and Charlie, set out to explore and exploit food resources. The player controls three captains who explore the planet PNF-404. The captains rely on the woodpeckers, the plant creatures they literally pull out of the ground. Pikmin helps the captains with everything. Without the captains to lead them all, the Pikmin won’t do anything, and without the Pikmin the captains can’t do anything.
Captain and Pikmin are each other’s lobsters.
Captains use the whistle to pick up picket lines and throw them to different tasks. Pikmin fight enemies, collect resources, push items and bring fruit, items and carcasses of the enemy into the base. They also have their own ships called Onions. The aim of the game is to build your spaceship and repair it to return home.
I don’t usually use the term cute, but…
Pickmins are so cute. They remind me of the ants or those dazzling creatures in Spirited Away or the peonies in Warcraft II or the crust in The Legend of Zelda. There are several types of Pikmin, such as the Red Pikmin, which is fire resistant and a good fighter, the Yellow Pikmin, which can conduct electricity and is a good excavator, or the Steinpikmin, which can break crystals. There are a few others, but I don’t want to ruin them. Each of them has its own strengths and weaknesses, so it is necessary to develop a strategy to make the best use of each type of Pikmin.
It’s hard work, but someone has to do it. -All the Rock Pickmin ever
I had never played a single game of Pikmin 3 Deluxe before. So far I’ve enjoyed the experience. I want to check the Pikmin and Pikmin 2. Can they get the switch? Antendo, take all my money! I don’t think I’ve ever played a game like this before. Actually, it’s kind of a cute version of StarCraft, but instead of going to war, it’s more of a small adventure where you explore a new planet. Moreover, this game generally seems to be a celebration of nature, which is overwhelming.
But there’s also a sad part. Pikmin is alive and kicking. They have eyes, little legs, they make sounds, and they can die, oh, in so many ways. For example, they can be crushed or eaten by enemies. There is also a timer, and if the Pikmin get lost or split up and don’t return to the ship or your group before the timer runs out, they will be left behind. It’s pretty sad, but it also encourages you to do whatever it takes to take care of Pickmin.
In addition to the main story, there is additional material such as secondary stories and additional mission objectives. New secondary missions, exclusive to the Switch version, include new Pikmins that are not part of the campaign. You can collect treasures, fight enemies, defeat bosses or perform various tasks. You can also receive a bronze, silver, gold or platinum medal, depending on your results. This extra content almost has a mandatory loser ratio, because you have to play it over and over again to reach your benchmark, and develop a strategy for your time and multitasking by managing different Pikmins with different captains.
I’m really enjoying the experience so far. The graphics are beautiful, the gameplay is absolutely fascinating, and it’s just a super fascinating game in general. I can’t believe it took me almost 20 years to open this site. There are so many ways to work on strategy, timing and incredibly beautiful puzzle solutions, and on top of that, those cute little Pikmin creatures. I can’t wait to play more franchise games.
|The graphics are beautiful. The game is a party in nature and represents a great balance between realistic nature and creative character design.||The game cycle is incredibly fascinating: from the main plot to the tasks and subplots.|
|The music is beautiful, but perhaps not unforgettable. The sound design of the Pikmin is very efficient and well executed.||So far I have really enjoyed the experience and I would set the reading factor to 11 if I could. I’m on the hook, and it’s a hard game.|
